Stage Management
For Vinnie it was not all “on the job training” but part of his curriculum in video/film school at RCA Institute for
Radio and TV Broadcasting in NYC and also part of the Communications Arts curriculum at NY Inst. of
Technology. Vinnie’s first job after school and service was as an all round technician at Schimmel Center for
the Performing Arts where he was called upon to stage manage, audio engineer, light, run the flys, follow
spots & build scenery on all sorts of performances from opera, modern dance, classical music ensembles,
Chinatown church variety shows and downtown corporate business meetings. His early A/V years at
Caribiner, NY in the ‘70s afforded him the opportunity to be on headset with many producers such as Alan
Crawford, Sandra Arnold, Judy Little and Amy Brownstein, all of whom had great technique and
professionalism in calling Corporate Theater. Vinnie has also had further learning experiences with today’s
great stage managers such as Rob Pushkin, Don Garrity, Eric Sheps, Mark Baltizar, Melinda Dequez, & Dick
Hammond.
Calling any show should be done by someone with some stage manager experience, particularly if it involves
live talent. Having a tech (video, audio, or lighting) call a show is never appropriate since it may conflict with
their position responsibilities. Many times it is even a stretch for the TD to call shows. Some shows standout
that a stage manager is required. On others, a TD should inform the producer when he or she thinks their on-
site plate is full and a independent SM would be advisable.
Since 1994 when Maintent was formed Vinnie’s Stage Manager duties has yearly accounted for 15% of his
work. Of the 85% TD work, I called about 50% of those shows. Today my work load has switched to about
35% as Stage Manager, 50% as TD and 15% in Exhibit Technical Project Management
Chicago Scenic Studios, Creative Technologies (formerly Media Control), and Upstaging call on Vinnie as a
Stage Manager in support of some of their clients.
Vinnie had a contract with McDonald's to SM all their OPNAD meetings which amounted to about 9 shows
over 2 1/2 year period from ’97 – ’00.
Vinnie Stage Managed the “Goodyear Tire & Rubber Dealer Meeting” from ’95 thru ’00 with live casts, roller
blade & ice skaters, inflatables, lots & lots of race cars, 4x4’s, trucks, daredevil motorcyclists, special effects
and many moving stage changes.
Vinnie called the” Weekender USA Casual Wear, Fashion Show & Meeting” in ’96 & ’97 and then took his
own advice and stepped aside in favor of full time SM.
The Gatorade National Sales Meetings in ’97 (San Diego) & ’98 (Chicago) presented interesting challenges
from Michael Jordan. In ’97 we video conferenced him in from a commercial shoot in Chicago and in ’98 we
had him live. Both were amidst live cast shows. In ’99 the show grew in on site TD responsibilities thereby
requiring it’s own dedicated SM.
Recently Vinnie has been calling meetings for DadeBehring in ’02 (Dave & Co. cast) & ’03 (CanvasMaster &
dancers) Fujisawa ‘03 (Dave & Co. cast) & some very general business meetings for OCE. Wells Fargo,
GBC, COMCAST, Abbott Labs, Gartner, EMC, NMNA and Unisys among others.

Recent Trade Show Experience FMI(IBM), CES(Motorola, CISCO, Honda), Exhibitor (MGD, NAB(ABC Radio), ADA(Roche), AADE(Disatronics), Mid-Atlantic Truck Show (MATS)(Kenworth), AACC(Dade Behring) PGA Show, Orlando '09 Private Trade Shows for: Cardinal Health, Bandag, Avanade, Southern Bell, Accenture OCE
